Painted Rocks

We have all collected and gathered shells.  Why not start collecting smooth rocks?

This could be a fun and easy DIY project!

Here are some cute examples of what you can do with a little paint...

I think I know two little people who will be all over the task of finding me some of these rocks :)

Catching Up

I'm trying to get caught up on posting some recent pics...

"Make S'mores" was on our summer to-do list, so we made some while Steve's mom was here.  This is how you make s'mores in SouthTexas (where we are experiencing a severe drought and have burn bans).  The grill will have to do!

K prefers hers sans marshmellow...

The kids helped me make homemade pizza for dinner the other night.  It was not as tasty as ordering one, but at least the kids had fun!  :)

Don't you love how toddlers are overzealous helpers?  I know I must relish this time, because I will soon have to beg them to help me do things!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Grandma Visits

Steve's mom came for a short visit last weekend.  As usual, the kids had a blast and would not leave her alone for a second!  Thanks for coming!

How I managed to get both kids smiling in these pics is beyond me :)!

Sweet Siblings

We bummed it at the pool for a few hours yesterday.  The scene in this picture is so reminiscent of my own childhood relationship with my sister.  She was always the "Big Sis", and I was always following her lead when we played together, even though we were only 15 months apart.  For some reason we were both eager to assume our roles!

She was the librarian, I would check out books.
She was the cashier, I was the shopper.
She was the waitress, and I was the diner.
She was the lifeguard, and I would need help.

And so I see the same thing happening with these two...Drew was the swim instructor and Kate was the student...

They will always be close in age, and I hope they always stay close at heart...

We Have A Swimmer!

Drew had his first ever swim lesson last week and he did great.  He was nervous about taking lessons and having to be in the big pool with no float.  By the end of the week, he was swimming half the length of our large pool (freestyle) by himself, float free!

This is a proud moment for us, because in April when we started going to the pool, he wouldn't so much as get out of the 1 ft. baby pool.  Now he is swimming!  It is truly amazing what exposure and practice can do for a child's confidence.

Kate and I did a little of this...don't ya just love summer?!

Terrified of jumping in any pool two weeks ago...now he is doing it!  Go Drew!

Paint Chip Letters

I have been seeing some cute uses for paint chips recently.  I decided to try some paint chip art for my daughter's new "big girl" room.  Instead of framing the art, I used paint chips to make the letters in her name more interesting.

I purchased white letters for her nursery 2 years ago from Hobby Lobby for $1.99 each.  I kept them white for a while, then I painted them chocolate brown and added ribbon to the back.  I wanted to ditch the ribbon and make the plain letters cuter!

These are the letters before...

Lucky for me, she has a short name!  I used lots of paint chips!  I started by stocking up on several different paint chips in similar shades.  I used a vitamin bottle cap to trace circles on each of the colors.  I began cutting, and cutting...and cutting!

Once I had enough circles to cover four letters, I started laying out my pattern (lighter shades on top working my way down towards the most saturated color).  Once layed out, I used a glue stick to adhere them to the letter.  A glue stick worked well because I was still able to move them a little if needed.

I left them to sit overnight, and then added a layer of modge podge to seal it and give it a glossy look.

I ripped off the ribbon and decided to rest the letters on top of her bookshelf.  The dark brown underneath gives them a bit of depth.

I think the paint chips create and bit of fun and whimsy for my 2 year old!  Boring to interesting!

Dining Room Paint Color

We have now been in this house for one year, and the dining room is the last room to be touched.  It has kind of become a catch-all for items that don't have a home.  I also have been using it as a work space for making over small furniture pieces and painting some stuff for the vendor booth.

Here is what it looks like right now.  Scary, huh?

It is the first room you see when you walk in the house, so the time has come to cover up the builder cream and get started on making it pretty.  First things first, paint.  It instantly sets the tone for the rest of the room.  I was going to go with a salmon/coral color, but after some discussion with my hubby, we decided to go more mainstream since we move a lot.  Every move I make in this house is slightly dictated by the fact that we will probably be selling in a few years. My mom always tells me not to live like this, but after 5 moves, this has become my reality!

I decided to go with a blue (obsessed, right?), but a much brighter, more true blue than I have used in other places in my house.  After doing a little research and getting a few samples, I decided on Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore.  I recently read somewhere that every paint color in your home should be able to exist in any other room in your house.  I think this color is a perfect fit for our taste and this home.  Of course this paint chip looks nothing like it does on my walls!

I am lucky because I have two eager beavers always waiting for their turn to paint!

I have company this weekend, but will hopefully get the rest of the paint up next week!  How cute is their graffiti art?

There is also a large niche on one of the walls in the dining room.  I thought about painting this a different color to highlight the architecture, but now I am siding towards wide stripes in the same color, using different sheens.  I guess I will cross that bridge when I get there!  More pics to come!

Kids Bowl Free

I signed my kids up for the Kids Bowl Free program and we utilized our free games this week!  Several of our friends did too, so it is fun way to get together on the cheap (you have to pay for shoe rental).

You can receive two free games, per child, per day for the entire summer at participating bowling alleys in your area.  Visit http://www.kidsbowlfree.com/ if you are interested in signing up your kids.  The coupons get sent right to your email, and it is a very easy process.

Thank goodness for bumpers!

And this little device!

Ahhhhhhh, the joy of simple fun and good friends!

DIY Sunburst Mirror

For all of you that ask me, "how do you find the time?", you really can create this mirror while your kids nap.  I know, because I did!

Sunburst mirrors are ALL OVER blogland, and the inspiration for mine came from JandJ Home via this post.   I thought I knew where I was going to hang this before I made it, now I am not so sure.  I ended up liking the look and the scale much more than I thought I was going to!

It was easy.  It was inexpensive.  I love the natural look of it with the cedar shims.

I used the same supplies and tutorial from JandJ Home:

2 flat craft rings (large and medium sized)
2 packs of cedar shims (got mine from Home Depot)
glue gun and glue sticks
12" round mirror

Here are a few pics of the process.  I glued down the first layer of shims at the same length.

I had enough shims to do 3 layers.  I glued the last two layers closer to the center and filled in where it looked bare (remember, I am an eyeballer :).

I picked up a 12" mirror from Hobby Lobby and glued it in the center with wood glue.

I put a stack of books and a heavy candle holder on top of the mirror over night.

I have not hung the mirror yet, because I haven't decided where it is going!  I will post a pic when it finally finds a home!

Cost breakdown:

2 packs cedar shims - $10 at Home Depot
Large craft ring - $3.99 (but used 40% of coupon at Michael's)
Small craft ring - $1.99
15 glue sticks - I buy packs of 20 for $1 at Dollar Tree
12" Mirror - $5.99 (but used a 40% coupon at Hobby Lobby)

Total cost was just under $20- I'll take it!

Sports Sunday

Steve is training for a half marathon and we couldn't be more proud of him!  He ran his personal best of 8 miles last weekend.  Hopefully 13 miles will be a breeze for him come November!

Of course, our sports fanatic child is very aware of when Daddy goes on a run or goes to "running practice".  I can hear him pretending to get ready for his own run, checking his watch, and telling Kate he has to get ready for running practic.  Drew finally asked Steve if he could go on a run with him this weekend.

They got up early (the only time you can be outside in SA), got their shoes on, got the water belt ready, and started on their way.

They made it .8 / mile and Drew was so proud of himself.  Oh, to be 3 again and to think running is fun!

We also decided to squeeze in a little soccer practice before watching the Women's World Cup game against Brazil.  Kate told me this week that she is "pretty sure she can be a ballerina and play soccer".

Drew watched the entire soccer game and was hanging on every play.  What a great game to watch!  Go USA!  He also kept telling us that Hope Solo was "pretty".  I have a feeling he is going to like girls who like sports!  :)

And while the game was on, Kate was sorting all of her trinkets.  This is her own "sport".  I think I need to have a "Hoarders" intervention on her!

Hope you all had a great weekend!
